Introduction:   Bookmaker is a classic asshole who suffers from The First Person Perspective. He believes his character is The One and only main character that Jake, our host, should feed action to (and be everyday). He is also fun and will always push the limits of adventure.

His Pitch: “Books (and now computers) are containment fields for the most valuable resource on our planet. Very soon, our action-packed stories will rise to become the crowned kingpin good-and-service that will value all the others of earth. Don’t wait for the rest of the humans to catch up! Invest in Story Sold businesses now before it’s too late!”

Supereconomic Powers:  Storytime travel

Character Flaws:  Doesn’t work well with others

Competition: “Mass audience media” corporations like Penguin Random House, Time Warner, and Disney.

ORIGIN STORY

Bookmaker will tell you that he was born on June 26, 1978, the same day our human host Jake was born.

That’s like saying Spiderman was born on Peter Parker’s birthday.

Bookmaker Jake was born in a moss covered, corrugated metal shack in The Northern Cascades. His benefactor and mentor, an indie crystal miner named Bob, had hired him to pack his crystals, build a trail, and watch his mine for the summer.

Bookmaker liked Bob a lot (best boss ever!), but he wasn’t a Rock Hound like his costars Archer and Millionaire Miner Rick. The real reason why he accepted the job was, Bookmaker was on the lam.

He run off to the woods with about 150 unbound copies of a novel that did not belong to him. It was called, The Living City, and it was owned by the team of characters who’d produced its action. And they were pissed that he was claiming to be the novel’s Author.

“The fucking arrogance of that guy is unbelievable!” Guide said as she made tracks for The Northern Cascades to catch him.

For the next five months, Guide tracked Bookmaker like a gun-slinging sherrif through The Fourth Wall and back again. Guide and her team all agreed that his attempts to copyright and monopolize their hard-won novel in his name was creating a singularity, a suck hole, which was threatening to infest their whole team with villainy. Yet, Bookmaker always managed to stay a few steps ahead of Guide…

He bound copies of “his novel” with trash he found in dumpsters: a Tang container, beer boxes, an empty mini-keg, burlap rice bags, gas cans, wax produce boxes, old carpet, towels, jack hammer hose, potato bags, cooking oil containers, and more. Bookmaker made his books everywhere to throw Guide off his trail. He made books on the porch of his cabin, at the crystal mine, along a snow-covered trail, on a mountaintop, in the middle of a river, and In Town in restaurants, bars, parks, and laundry mats.

Eventually, Guide and the rest of his team caught up with him.

They didn’t mess around. They brought him down hard, making it crystal clear that drinking beer and becoming a future famous Author was not their top priority in life. They reminded him that Jake, their human host, had family, friends, and beautiful Emily waiting for him in Portland.

They were also broke, so Bookmaker struck a deal. They would permit him the title of Bookmaker Jake and help him sell his books at local events in Portland, and he would agree to fire his infested character the Author and return to Portland.

In the years that followed his teammates kept their word. They sold over 150 handcrafted copies of The Living City at events like Northwest Book Festival, Wordstock, Bumpershoot, and a few local art shows.

To this day, Bookmaker still hates being demoted to the role of a “story packager.” He likes to think that his stories belong to him.

BOOKMAKER JAKE IS OUR CHARACTER CONTROL OPERATOR.

HERE’S HIS SERVICE SCENES:

AN INTRO TO CHARACTER CONTROL

Can you imagine a world where all goods and services are sold with their stories? How cool would it be to go to the store and watch movie clips from the story of how your lovable local farmer grew your carrots before you bought them? Or watch the story of how your bread was baked by a badass neighborhood baker? On the other hand, how horrifying would it be to watch the production stories of, let’s say, a loud, sweaty, joyless factory that cranked out toys 24hrs a day?

Bookmaker Jake spent over 13 years imagining a new “storysold: economy” where stories were the ruling king of all currencies. When he was done writing The Living City, he spent the next few years making copies of his novel that came complete with their own book production scenes. He sold over 150 at events like Wordstock, Bumpershoot, and NW Book Festival.

Nowdays, Bookmaker is no longer satisfied with making his own books in the hope that he will inspire his readers to build The Living City for him. With a lot of conflict and strongarming from his teammates, Bookmaker has a new dream he’s putting into action. It’s been a real struggle for him, but he’s reluctantly agreed to exterminate that tired old character called Author. It’s the same character Guide calls, “Wannabe,” or “Future Famous Author,” or just “Asshole” for short.

How does one go about exterminating a character? you ask.

We wish we had an easy answer for that. Like our Editor Farmer Emily says, “Long is wrong,” but as usual Bookmaker doesn’t listen too well. His new character “Character Control Operator” has a long, jangled, overthought, clever master plan for exterminating Author. He claims Author is a “arch keystone character” for the race of generically engineered characters we know as The Generics. We know he’s just stalling, but he says he won’t kill off his Author until he wipes every generic super infested character from the face of the planet.

We get it. It’s a classic villain move: Save the guy you’re not so secretly in love with for last. We’re pretty sure it makes more sense to kill off Author first…but whatever! We’ll play along because we value our teammate Bookmaker in spite of his many flaws.

In keeping with our pest control genre, he’s decided to treat well-known generic giants, super infestated characters, immortal pest control gods, and transnational monsters like Orkin, Terminex, Ecolab, Western, and Rentokil. Don’t ask us what he means by “treat.” It’s a wierd word (even when its used properly in medicine), and we have no clue what he means by it. Bookmaker’s writings on the subject of exterminating super infested/generic characters are not easy to understand. Try reading his first live action novel, The Rise and Fall of The Novel Corporation if you dare! In his defense, no literary figures (not even Ghostbusters) have taken a realistic stab at what it means to control or exterminate pesky unwanted characters. Humans wage wars to “kill the enemy,” but everyone knows bombs, bullets, and beans can’t really kill, or even control, the character of your enemies. Killing our villians is the easy part. Something a lot more artful is needed to bring an end the raging singular characteristiscs of an infestation.

So what’s Bookmaker’s master plan? Unfortunately, he’s going to continue to write stories like Asshole Authors have done for centuries, but he’s going to do that with a new twist.  He’s now writing “service stories” and “live action novels” for readers who want more action in their action packed tales of daring to. In time, he hopes to inspire other Assholes and Wannabes like him to get off their asses, stop gulping whiskey, and stop living vicariously through their actors, extras, and employees like Captain Kurk in their swivel writing chairs, and then they will be free to play a more interesting and active role in making their dreams come true (whatever they are). The future belongs to the bookmakers, scene slingers, storybankers, and live action novelists who refuse to hide behind The Fourth Wall, write words like laws, and expect a world full of actors to bring their stories to life for them. We all only have One Story and it’s worth packing with action.

The books in the photos below are a few of the first live action novels produced for a customer who bought a book’s worth of pest control for The Little Cabin in The Woods. Every chapter is a service and our little team of industry rebels have rallied to make it fun, educational, and rich with actions that support, not distract, from our customers’ daily stories.

If you’re not too hooked on the classic Maiden Call and Hero Response of classic pest control, we’d like to invite you to start your live action novel today and join our quest to kick The Script and slay some old industry giants by showing them how to end pesky infestations like them…

“WE’RE READY TO BELIEVE YOU!”

A) BUY STORYSOLD: PEST CONTROL BY THE BOOK

In ten years, it is our great hope that live action novels about our pest control adventures will be the only service we sell. It’s the perfect alternative for customers who have regular conflicts with their “wild creature friends” (as Guide would say), busines owners who’re too busy to track The Action, or folks like you (wink, wink) who think it would be pretty cool to produce a book about The Wildness in and around their home. All pest control aside, how many people have someone writing a live action novel about them, their bugs, and their home?

The single most environmentally damaging service inflicted by Generic Pest Control are regularly scheduled treatments that spray pesticides everywhere (rain, snow, or shine) whether they disvover activity or not. We can change that by producing a regular, on-going service story about pest control that kicks The Old Industry Script and fails everytime to follow a generic treatment program. Our team will always be able to drum up some action, even if it doesn’t involve killing bugs, rats, or raccoons. How cool would it be to develop truley preventative pest control devices like rat proof chicken pens, owl boxes, bat barns, mason bee shelters, tree rat/squirrel shelters, bird houses, and outdoor ant shrines that seek to build healthy, postive working relationships with our non-human friends?

If that wasn’t enough to sell you on buying a book’s worth of pest control adventures, here’s some more selling points:

(1) when you buy a book’s worth of pest control, you get the services of our whole team: Wilderness Guide, Pest Predator, Bookmaker, and our Human Host Jake. Hell, we might even introduce a special guest star like Farmer Emily of Full Cellar Farm (aka the Vole Hammer), Master Freddy, or Pip the Evergreen Jungle Cat.

(2) every chapter service is set at $85 per hour of action spent In Scene at your home territory or business. That price will not include the cost of permanent props or materials, but it will include the time Bookmaker spends writing and making your book.

(3) If you wish, your live action novel will be posted online for all two of our readers to enjoy. This could be yet another way to advertise whatever you wish to advertise. Sky’s the limit: pitch new products, political rants, religious views, life philosophies, shout outs, passion projects, cute kitty pictures!

THE ONLY HITCH IS, BOOKMAKER WON’T MAKE YOUR BOOK UNTIL WE HAVE AT LEAST 3 CHAPTERS WORTH OF ACTION FROM YOUR SERVICE STORY

– NO WACKY HUSTLES OR CONTRACTS –

IT’S YOUR STORY. YOU CAN END OUR SERVICE AT ANYTIME.

B) THE LIVING CITY: ORIGIN OF STORYSOLD

Humans ask us all the time, “What does your name mean?” We try to explain what being Storysold means, but the only good answer to that question is our 500 plus page origin story – The Living City.

For example, here’s Bookmaker’s final draft of our attempt to sell our books like books are sold in The Living City

THE MAKING OF THE SALE PITCH

And here’s a sober selling of our origin story – The Blurb (written by Farmer Emily):

“In a novel that showcases a future where every product and service is “storysold,” we encounter The Living City—a floating metropolis that exists in a state of perfectly ordered anarchy. Into this city come under-cover agent Wylie Jones and his cover girlfriend Maggie Stone, who have been sent by the U.S. government to gather evidence against the city’s founder and president, the mysterious Mr. Chester Weston.

With the help of a quirky cast that includes a tennis-skirted security guard, a boy king, a cowless cowboy, two barbarians, and a handful of sea monsters, Wylie and Maggie learn to make their way in a new “storybanking” economy, where time is literally money and even worms are paid for their work. When they realize the events they have set in motion will likely destroy The Living City, they and their friends must gather all of their unconventional forces to save the homes they love…”

If you choose this storyline, Bookmaker will hand deliver or mail you a custom made copy of The Living City, which comes complete with maps and illustrations.

C) THE RISE AND FALL OF THE NOVEL CORPORATION (THE ORIGINAL LIVE ACTION NOVEL)

The Rise and Fall of The Novel Corporation is our first live action novel told from the perspective of our supporting cast of characters.

The Blurb: Our human host Jake was incorporated in Spring 2017 by a team of starving refugee, live action characters who broke The Fourth Wall and turned his life upside down. After many misadventures, they team up with their new human friend Jake to develop Storysold: Pest Control.

[ The short novel features the passing of Jake’s uncle “Just Jim.” R.I.P. ]

BOOK A BOOK PRODUCTION SCENE NOW

Introduction: Bookmaker is a typical Asshole who suffers from The First Person Perspective. He believes his character is The One and Only Main Character that Jake, our human host, should feed action to every day. He is also the creative engine of our team, playful, fun, and relentless in his pursuit of winning our daily victories.

Supereconomic Powers: storytime traveling in future-like, present-like, past-like courses in our inescapable Ever Presence. Bookmaker gains his power from the doomsy art of depression; the need to retreat from The Action into the more perfect, mathematical, less chaotic world of make believe, fiction, theories, conspiracies, and other such heady nonsense.

Character Flaws: His sense of perfection/righteous objectivity often leaves him feeling depressed because he can’t meaure up to his own god-like standards, which inevitably feeds his need to escape from “the evils of the world” by means of drinking beer, running (masocism), monologuing, and binge watching generic action heroes on The Fourth Wall.

Competition: Bookmaker is at heart a fiction writer, and he feels competative with any Author who writes and produces generically engineered characters designed to host mass audiences of humans like corporations, churches, business entities, sport teams, non-profit organizations, or other fictional governing bodies. He also takes aim at fictional land bodies (or FLaBs) like city identities, mental states, and nationhoods, but only when he’s feeling enboldened by too much beer.

Amazingly, Bookmaker has been able to somehow produce 2 live action novels. He’s not very proud of them, because “they’re too new to be any good yet,” but we sure as shit think they’re cool:

- I contacted Storysold Pest control for mice/rat problems for a rental property. I was very impressed with their website about the process they use to keep out rodents not just catching them and calling it good. They are very professional, explained the process in detail and showed up on time for our appointment. It’s been a week or so since he came out and my tenant hasn’t heard or seen any mice/rats. Jake, the owner is passionate about helping people and very knowledgeable in all aspects of pest control! Don’t waste your time on any other company call him first. Teri C

Jake at Storysold Pest Control is knowledgeable and professional. He is quick to respond and reasonably priced. I find him to be trustworthy and ethical, he does not sell unnecessary services and he works with customers that are willing to do some of the work themselves as well as with customers who just want the whole service done without being involved themselves. While other companies told me I needed to replace all my insulation and do massive crawl space renovations, he offered several affordable options. With his help we no longer have a mouse problem and it was done at a fraction of what other companies quoted us. I appreciate his flexibility and fun, friendly personality. If I ever have another pest control issue, he will be my first call.

Working with Storysold was a dream. We had a huge undertaking with almost 40,000 sq ft between two properties! With both buildings being over 100 years old keeping critters out is difficult and the previous tenants of the building allowed a huge infestation to occur. Jake was able to not only eradicate the unwanted pests he also filled holes and cracks and has stopped them from having easy access. Communication was great and the pricing was fair and manageable for our small nonprofit! I will continue to work with Storysold and recommend them for any pest control needs, big or small!

Mouse in the house!!!! I texted Sunday morning after having chased a mouse through the house Saturday all day and Sunday at 3am... they came out to the house by 12:30 that Sunday. Jake got in the crawl space and checked the outside of the house for entry points. While there was no evidence of a major problem, I opt ed for the full attack. He came in with an Arsenal of traps that he placed in the kitchen and crawl space. He didn t hard sell and his prices were very affordable! He was also very honest with potential outcomes which I appreciate. He literally just left and I haven t heard any traps go off but just based on his customer service, I would totes recommend him! He s coming back in a week to check traps. I ve read some horror stories about other companies but I feel very confident that I m working with an upstanding professional. And he s dog friendly!

I was so pleased q his company I would highly highly recommend him for any of your critter/pest? needs! Thank you Jake!

Jake of StorySold is proficient, affordable, and punctual. He took his time with carefully evaluating my problem, fixed my issue, and did extras like helping me fix my mattress which he treated for bed bugs. Can't recommend him enough and will use him and his company in the future. Got two other quotes which were much higher each quoting at least $1,000 without a guarantee.
